Evan Alexander

On September 6 I had a doctor appointment at 9 and I was dilated to 3 1/2 centimeters, a huge improvement from the week before when the doctor couldn't even feel my cervix. She stripped my membranes to help things along and said that we could go ahead with the induction! It made me so happy because I was so ready to meet our little guy! So home we went to wait for a call from labor and delivery.

We went home and watched a movie. Around 11 the movie was over and I was impatient for the phone call. I gave labor and delivery a call to follow up and they said they had been super busy but would give my doctor a call to see if she still wanted me to come in this late in the day. So we waited some more. We ate some left over pizza and I turned on Law and Order:SVU. Since the hospital hadn't called yet I decided to take a nap. I had just closed my eyes and the phone rang. It was 12:45 and the hospital wanted to know if we could be there at 1:30.

We got to the hospital and the nurse got me hooked up to the I.V. and Pitocin. She checked me and I was at a 4, so when the doctor stripped my membranes it was actually doing something! I wanted to wait and seem how far I could go without the epidural, but the Pitocin was really kicking in and by 3 I was ready. After I got the epidural the nurse the nurse checked me again and I was at a 5, she wanted me to let her know if I started to feel a little pressure. It was around 5 when I could feel the contractions. They weren't painful, I could just feel my stomach tightening so I called the nurse and she checked me again and I was at a 6. The nurse had me switch the side I was laying on to see if that would help me make more progress. I told Jason to go get something to eat but stay in the hospital. I figured we would stll be there a while. Almost imediately after he left I started to feel pressure in my butt. I thought it was weird to feel pressure there but when I mentioned it to the nurse she said it was normal and she had a hunch that I was ready. She checked me again and sure enough I was at a 10! I called Jason to let him know and told him we were waiting on the doctor and Jason before we started to push.

We had to wait for the doctor since she was in the OR delivering a 31 week baby. I started to feel more pressure, but since I pushed for 2 hours with Emily I wasn't too concerned. After feeling really strong pressure twice I joked with Jason that Evan wasn't going to wait for the doctor. Jason asked me if I wanted him to get the nurse, I told him I was fine. But then I felt that really strong pressure again and I knew something had just happened. I told Jason I needed the nurse and I pushed the nurse button. Jason asked if he should look but I told him I was too scared. The nurse came rushing in saying she had been watching the monitors. She pulled back the blanket and his head was already out! Baby Evan really was trying to deliver himself! I pushed once and the rest of him came out! It was a pretty neat experience to say the least. The doctor came in just as he was coming out!

I got to hold him while they got him wiped off and he looks so much like Emily! I had a 2nd degree tear where I tore with Emily, but I seem to be handling the pain better this time around. Our special little boy was also born with a special extra thumb! You read that right! It's a mini thumb shooting off of his regular thumb. The nurses said there is a small bone so we will most likely have to take him to a plastic surgeon. Jason just said he will be extra good at video games lol! We sure are in love with this boy, extra thumb and all!
